 | Levonorgestrel (Brand Name: Plan B) is used for preventing pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or suspected birth control failure. Levonorgestrel is a progestin. How it works is not fully known. It may prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, altering transport of sperm or eggs to prevent fertilization, or altering the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation should fertilization occur. Precautions Levonorgestrel will not end an existing pregnancy. Do not use Levonorgestrel if you are pregnant. Levonorgestrel is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Levonorgestrel , check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Levonorgestrel may cause dizziness. This effect may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Levonorgestrel with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Recommendations Take Levonorgestrel as soon as possible after suspected birth control failure or after you have unprotected sexual intercourse. The first dose must be taken within 72 hours. Take the second tablet 12 hours after the first tablet. However, your doctor may instruct you to take Levonorgestrel in a different way. Follow the directions provided by your doctor. Levonorgestrel can be used any time during the menstrual cycle. If vomiting occurs within 1 hour after taking either tablet of Levonorgestrel , talk with your health care provider to discuss whether to repeat that dose. A physical exam is not needed before taking Levonorgestrel . If you are unsure about your general health or pregnancy status, a follow-up physical or pelvic exam may be needed after taking Levonorgestrel. If you miss a dose of Levonorgestrel , contact your doctor right away. Side Effects i-pill has no long-term or serious side effects, and is safe to use for almost every woman. Nausea, vomiting and headache are some common side effects after taking i-pill. You might also have some lower abdominal pain or find your breasts more tender than usual. All this should stop within a day or two. There are chances of unexpected vaginal bleeding, but this is not dangerous and should clear up by the time you have your next period. i-pill might also cause your next period to come early or later than normal. But if your periods are delayed by more than a week, you should go in for a pregnancy test and contact your doctor. i-pill will have no lasting effect that may complicate future (and wanted) pregnancies. i-pill is not recommended if you are allergic to levonorgestrel, which is the name of the medicine in i-pill. Uses: The uses of I-Pill ( Levonelle One Step, Generic Levonorgestrel ) include: This medication is used in women to prevent pregnancy after birth control failure (e.g., broken condom) or unprotected sex. It is a progestin hormone that prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) and changing the womb and cervical mucus to make it more difficult for an egg to meet sperm (fertilization) or attach to the wall of the womb (implantation). Using this medication will not stop an existing pregnancy or protect you against sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia). This medication should not be used as a regular form of birth control. How to use Levonorgestrel Oral Take 1 tablet by mouth as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Take the second tablet by mouth 12 hours after taking the first dose. This medication may be taken with or without food. This medication works best when it is taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. In some cases, your doctor may instruct you to take both tablets at once. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. |
